With everything that’s happening around us – social distancing, stay at home orders, and the pandemic as a whole, our lives have changed and we are feeling the impact that it takes on our bodies. I am very fortunate to be able to work from home during these times, however the lack of consistent active mobility, face to face interactions and fresh air has taken a toll on me. The restless nights where I just can’t seem to put my phone down and waking up to bags and dark circles under my eyes reminds me that sleep is essential to my overall health. I started doing my own research and looked into herbal remedies and supplements that could help alleviate a few of the issues I’ve been experiencing. My first stop landed me where all the recent hype has been, CBD.
What exactly is CBD? Cannabidiol, also known as CBD is a chemical compound derived from the Cannabis sativa plant. Unlike, Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), CBD is non-psychoactive. In other words, it won’t get you “high”. That seems great but how can this help me? Healthline reported that in a 2019 study, it was suggested that CBD could improve sleep as well as reduce anxiety. The control group consisted of 72 subjects, of which 47 experienced anxiety and 25 reported poor sleep. They were given a 25mg CBD capsule each day for a month. 79.2 percent of the patients reported lower anxiety levels and 66.7 percent reported better sleep. These results almost sounded too good to be true, so I had to see for myself!
I was recently introduced to the company Bace Collective, which provides access to hemp for health. Founders, Sarabeth and Justin believe in the potential for cannabis and hemp to play a positive role in today’s society. I’ve never tried a CBD/Hemp product so I wasn’t entirely sure where to start. Luckily, Bace Collective had already thought of that. Their Discovery Pack is a 7 day guided experience which will help you determine what dosage is right for you. Each box consists of 8 packets, one for each day of the week plus an extra. Within the packets there are capsules with specific dosages of either 10mg, 25mg, 35mg or 50mg. The point is to start with the lowest dosage on Day 1 and gradually increase throughout the week. You can take the capsule in the morning to help reduce your overall stress and relieve pain or at night to improve your sleep patterns. I recommend taking notes each day, to help with comparing the dosages and how your body reacted to them.
I finally decided that I would take the capsules to help get my sleep routine back on track. Let me add, I am a light sleeper who has extremely loud neighbors with kids. I generally fall asleep around 2AM – 3AM. I’m usually woken up at 5AM when they are leaving for work, and again at 8AM when the kids get up for virtual learning. I’ve resorted to sleeping with my Airpods in just so I can get a better rest. I was definitely hoping for a miracle here.
On the first two days, I started off with the 10mg capsules. Knowing my body, yet still unaware of how these would affect me, I decided to be more realistic and take the capsules at 11PM. It took about an hour for the capsules effects to kick in. I felt an overall sense of calm take over my body so I took that as my clue to jump into bed. Within 15 minutes, I was asleep, a very deep sleep. Although, I did not toss and turn throughout night, I was still rattled by the sounds of my neighbors. Each of these mornings, I woke up feeling more upbeat, and much less groggy.
Based on the results from day one and two, I was really excited to move on to the 25mg capsules. Following the previous steps, I took the capsules at 11PM on each day. This time I noticed that it only took about 30 minutes for my body to react. Unlike sleep aids, these capsules did not hit me all at once or knock me out instantly. Instead, my body felt more like it was preparing to wind down. My joints felt less tense, my mind less clouded and an overwhelming sense of relaxation took hold. By 12AM, I was in a deep slumber. On these mornings, I woke up feeling even more energized than the days before with no grogginess whatsoever.
As days five and six rolled in, I decided to take the capsules a bit later (12AM), since it was the weekend. The packets contained 2 capsules, 1 x 25mg and 1 x 10mg to add up to 35mg total. I did notice similar feelings of relaxation and calm however, since I had no real reason to wake up early the next day, I fought the urges to sleep. This is when I decided that, if I was to integrate CBD into my daily life, I would limit my intake to weekdays.
On day 7, I went back to my normal routine of taking the capsule at 11PM. With this being the final day, I had worked my way up from10mg to a whopping 50mg. Now, I can admit I really thought that this would have me out for the count and asleep within 15 minutes which simply was not the case. Similarly to days three and four, it took about 30 minutes for the capsule to kick in but right away, my body took the hint and began to unfurl. I can describe the feeling as a load being taken off my shoulders and letting out a sigh of relief. Not longer after, I was put soundly to sleep. Despite each day feeling more or less similar to the previous, I can say that day 7 was by far the most impactful. I did not toss or turn during the night and I was able to sleep through my neighbors noise until my alarm went off. I was pleasantly surprised by this. Despite it being a Monday morning, I woke up feeling incredibly active and ready to start my day.
So what’s the consensus? To sum it all up for you, I think that any one, or all of us who’ve suffered through sleepless nights, body aches, anxiety or stress can really benefit from adding CBD to their regimen. During these times, I think it is important for us to look into more herbal products that can assist in aiding a variety of ailments without the addictive properties of certain medications. For someone who doesn’t know where to start on their CBD journey, Bace Collective has already figured that out for you. I would highly recommend their Discovery Pack to anyone who is looking to gradually introduce CBD into their life. For me, I think a dosage of 35mg and higher works best to promote better sleeping habits. Throughout the entire journey, I did not experience any side effects. If you are still skeptical, it is important for you to conduct your own research on CBD, gather and compare information and decide on goals you’d like to target (ex: reducing stress). All in all, I will definitely be looking to purchase Bace Collective’s Duo Plus (25mg-50mg). I guess it’s safe to say that for me, CBD does live up to the hype!
