3 life-hacking products designed for COVID times to try now

In the last 3 months, we’ve seen our communities face unprecedented challenges from lock downs, work from home, social distancing, to the closures of schools and many businesses. With all these changes occurring, we’ve adapted to new ways of living, conducting ourselves in public and how we interact with one another.  Amidst all these dramatic changes, the pandemic has presented itself as a new space for innovations ranging from devices that save lives, to more lifestyle-oriented and novelty gadgets. Out of my curiosity for all things new, especially ones that are purposeful, I took a look into some of the new inventions that have been created in response to the pandemic. To my delight, the simplicity of some of these innovations really make it hard to believe they weren’t a “thing” before.

No more touching with your fingers

We’ve all seen it. The widespread media coverage of the dangers of Corona Virus and how quickly it can spread from person to person. Medical experts have debated back and forth whether it should be essential to wear face masks and gloves when venturing out. As someone who considers themselves a germophobe, simple tasks seem ever more daunting. In comes the Keychain Touch Tool by Peel. This rather small invention clips on to your keychain and allows you to push buttons and open doors while avoiding germs. What I love is that once I’ve completed my tasks, I can give the tool a quick once over with an antibacterial wipe and keep my day moving. And before I forget, did I mention it can be used as a bottle opener as well? A perfect 3 in 1!

Now one thing that has been a completely new addition to people’s lives is wearing a face mask. I don’t know how many times I’ve grabbed my purse, keys and jacket to leave my house only to walk right back inside because I’d forgotten my mask. Brands like Virustatic, a UK–based bio-tech firm have been working to create alternatives to the traditional masks that we’re used to seeing. The Virustatic Shield is a face covering that helps stop the spread of airborne pathogens. Live virus testing has shown their technology traps and disables up to 96% of airborne viruses, including coronavirus, flu, SARS, MERS and the common cold.  The science behind it is the result of 10 years of research by biochemists.  What’s more is that for those looking to make more of a fashion statement while protecting themselves against viruses, this “snood” may be just what you’re looking for. As for me, I think the idea of messing up my hair to get this on and off makes this more of an effort to a good old surgical mask.  I still love the innovation and science behind it though.

Catch yourself before touching your face

Finally, my search lead me to an invention that I like to call the “Body Alarm”. The Immutouch Wristband was designed to alert the wearer anytime they reach to touch their face. The company claims that the average person touches their face about 23 times a day. Yuck! As we know germs spread quickly from our hands to other surfaces and most of us including myself tend to touch our faces without remembering to wash our hands first. The Immutouch uses a personalized algorithm to track your hand movements and alerts you when it senses you’re in “dangerous territory”. According to the makers, their aim is to help build routines to keep you and others safe. Honestly speaking, I don’t know how handy this would actually be in my everyday life. I think for me personally, the constant vibration reminder would start to annoy me after a while. Nonetheless, I admire the ingenuity and sleekness of the device and I’m sure that someone out there is most certainly benefiting from it.

Inventors, innovators, neighbors, keep it going and bring on more new ideas, products and solutions!  All innovation gives us hope that together we will find a way.
